Pellegrino's New Video Samples

May2012WebsiteAdd

All my new music and new videos are now on YouTube. Years ago when I started posting pieces on YouTube I was not at all pleased with their compression algorithms which at that time led to a significant loss of sound and video quality. Today YouTube's algorithms have improved enough that I find most of their work at least borderline acceptable. Because everyone, including myself, is in such a hurry today, the problem with posting high quality audio and video files on my own site is that it takes too long to download them even with a good broadband connection. So go to my YouTube channel to experience my latest work. I acquired the new iPad in late April of 2012 and have been in a ecstatic work frenzy ever since then.

The seven videos that follow are large files that take a while to download even with a good broadband connection. They are of better quality than the YouTube compressed files but it's difficult for most people to see and hear the difference. For historical interest older video postings follow this group of seven items.

From Part 2: The DVDs and Part 3: The CDs of Emergent Music And Visual Music: Inside Studies.

Includes Program Notes (from YouTube posting) with Video Sample Links (found at the end of each program note).

If you want to view my video files with enhanced video and audio quality from this site with no download problems you should use the following URL to download Apple's free Safari browser - http://www.apple.com/safari/download/. Every other browser I've tested seems to choke on one video file or another. Unless you're blessed with a fast connection, let at least half the file download before you start to play it. Very frustrating business but that's just life in the experimental video world in May of 2010. Lower quality files of the same pieces are available on YouTube. At this point I decided it was not worth compressing my video files any further for play on the iPad (as much as I love the device).

Just Beyond The Event Horizon

The visual material is from Part Two: The DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES. It is an example of my performance-videography shot in a concert event (one of hundreds) I produced as a visiting artist at University of Wisconsin-Madison with local artists. The piece is a reminder that life can be viewed as play just beyond the pull of the black hole that is our ultimate destiny. The more intense your play, the greater your power to resist the pull. Ain't youth wonderful?

The audio (electronic growls and dance pulses) is from the first of four CDs called THE ELECTRONIC ARTS OF SOUND AND LIGHT, VOLUMES 1-4 OF MUSIC FOR THE BOOK. My book with the same title was published in 1983 although I completed the writing of it in 1981. Over the years it's been called by readers and other researchers "a classic", "seminal", "a treasure", and "a bible", all of which I find pleasing. It has been out of print for years but it's still a hot seller through the online book stores. That book was based on the first 14 years of my research in the electonic arts (1967-1981). It includes photos and loads of illustrations but this is the first time I am publically releasing any of the music and visuals on which the book is based outside of my public performances and presentations. My latest project, EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES is based on over four decades of research, composition, and solo and collaborative performances in the electronic arts. That project also includes Part One: The Book and Part Three: The CDs. Video Sample

The book of the same title was published in 1983 although I completed the writing of it in 1981. Excerpt from Study 12 - Deb Fox Tour Two

Study 12 - Deb Fox Tour Two is on DVD Volume 1 of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES. Every single sound you hear emerges from Deb Fox's viola musings. The full title for her various pieces on the DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC is THE DEB FOX HETEROPHONIC ALCHEMICAL TOURS. Heterophonic refers to the idea of multiple versions of a melody sounding simultaneously. It's a musical process that's been with us longer than we can remember. Deb's playing is joined by the sonic output of an algorithm simultaneously alchemically transforming her playing into a melody (sometimes with trails) of it own devising, with a little help from its composer pal, electronic arts pioneer Ron Pellegrino.

The DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES are now available. Part 1: The Book is also available; it contains background and theoretical information as well as explanatory notes of what's found on the DVDs. Video Sample

From Study 2 - The Unison from DVD Volume 1 of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES

The Unison is from Visual Music Meditations, a set of video pieces with my music and music synthesizer generated laser animations that have their roots in my earliest explorations of music synthesizers dating back to 1967. The unison is produced by a 1:1 frequency ratio, in other words, two sources sounding the same pitch. The movement is created by phase differences (very slight frequency differences). The evolving shapes are created by spectral manipulations (transient frequency content that accompanies the fundamental frequencies). Many people tune into this sort of imagery on a cellular level because this is the way nature creates matter - energy having frequency, amplitude, and phase relationships in harmony with other energy thereby entering into marriages that precipitate into what we recognize as substance. Hearing it and seeing it simultaneously helps to provide some insight into the process.

The DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES are now available as Part 2: The DVDs. Part 1: The Book contains background and theoretical information as well as explanatory notes of what's found on the DVDs. Video Sample

Excerpt from Study 3 - Cynthia's Dream

Study 3 - Cynthia's Dream is on DVD Volume 1 of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES.

Every single sound you hear emerges from Cynthia Fanning's voice as she recounts her dream. Her voice is processed by a special purpose music computer called the Fairlight Voicetracker, a music instrument that translates sound variables into music synthesizer control information (MIDI signals). So Cynthia's voice via the MIDI signals conducts a music synthesizer orchestra that paints a cloud of self-induced sound around her voice as she speaks.

The dancer/choreographer is Jean Kerr from Illinois Wesleyan University. She and Ron Pellegrino, in real time, performed a visual music duet. She danced and Ron Pellegrino did real time performance videography.

The DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES are now available as Part 2: The DVDs. Part 1: The Book contains background and theoretical information as well as explanatory notes of what's found on the DVDs. Video Sample

Study 4 - Yo-Yo from Emergent Music And Visual Music: Inside Studies

Excerpt from Study 4 - Yo-Yo, from DVD Volume 3: Pythagoras & Pellegrino In Petaluma, from Part 2: The DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES, a current project by electronic arts pioneer, Ron Pellegrino. Volumes 3 and 4 of Part Three: The DVDs are devoted completely to the tuning principles of Pythagoras which not only lead to beautiful imagery but are at the root of all things material and, according to mystics over the millenia, all that is to be found in the universe, material and otherwise. The DVDs of EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES are now available as Part 2: The DVDs. Part 1: The Book contains background and theoretical information as well as explanatory notes of what's found on the DVDs. Video Sample
